The Surprise City Council issued a proclamation recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting.
Vice Mayor John Williams presented the proclamation to Laura Horsely, Program Director at local domestic violence shelter Eve’s Place.
Domestic violence affects millions of Americans each year. A survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that, on average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men.
Residents are encouraged to help raise awareness by joining City of Surprise employees in wearing purple clothing or a purple ribbon throughout the month of October.
If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, you are encouraged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE or visit www.TheHotline.org.
